1:50PM ColdFire Processor Core For The QB50 CubeSat - Demonstrating Reliable Computing In Space With A Fast Track Project - Patrick McNally & Ryan Miller
The University of Michigan Space Physics Research Lab (UM SPRL) was handed the challenge of putting two small satellites in orbit on an extremely aggressive schedule. The constraints of space based computing include low power, small packaging, and radiation hardness. Utilizing the Silvaco ColdFire processor core technology with an FPGA, UM SPRL has proven the approach with two QB50 CubeSats, now operating successfully in orbit. This presentation will describe the program challenges, design approach, and mission success enabled by ColdFire processor core technology.
2:20PM TCAD As A Tool To Inform Engineers In The Age Of IoT - Dr. Rob Pearson
Semiconductor engineering for the Internet of Things (IoT) era brings about new challenges to semiconductor process and device design, requiring engineers to approach nano-scale problems in new way. For instance manufacturing limits and variability now depend more on nano-scale CVD and plasma etch processes than traditional lithography, implant or diffusion. Additionally new device types (i.e FinFETs, FeFETs, TFTs) are becoming of increased interest as traditional CMOS will not satisfy performance requirements. In this talk RIT will provide perspective on how a combination of TCAD simulation and laboratory work allows their students and faculty researchers to better understand and address the semiconductor manufacturing problems of tomorrow.

We will then present an in-depth exploration of exactly where the differences are coming from. At the end of this webinar, switching between different layout parasitic extraction tools, calibrating settings to a new technology node, qualifying PDK updates etc will no longer be a bottleneck for CAD teams.

To the non-experienced company needing a custom chip, ASIC or SOC for their new “bright idea” IoT product and to their engineers, the task of developing, manufacturing, and getting the chip delivered is daunting. This talk will outline the overwhelming number of tools, skill sets, costs, IP acquisition and industry associations needed to navigate the chip design and delivery process. The presentation will also, take a look at how the industry presently supports new chip development and where it needs to go in the future to streamline the process for the non-experienced companies that will no doubt fuel the IoT boom when it truly comes.

Mr. Patrick McNally is the Managing Director of the University of Michigan XTRM/SPRL Labs, a laboratory of the UM College of Engineering which develops research hardware and software. In addition to space instrumentation and CubeSats, he manages a portfolio of personnel and projects supporting the CYGNSS constellation, the PIXL high voltage system for Mars 2020, the PIMS pre-filtering system for Europa Clipper, and a variety of technology development projects supporting the broad research interests of the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Mr. Ryan Miller is a Lead Engineer at the University of Michigan XTRM/SPRL Labs. He is Chief Engineer for the QB50 project, which delivered two 2U CubeSats to support an international effort of to deliver 50 CubeSats to low Earth orbit to measure properties of the thermosphere. He has led the UM SPRL efforts to design and deliver command and data handling systems supporting state of the art instrumentation including the Mars Science Laboratory (SAM), the LADEE and MAVEN spacecraft, and most recently on the ExoMars rover mission to be launched in 2020 (MOMA).

Dr. Robert Pearson received his Ph.D from SUNY Buffalo. After graduation he worked in the semiconductor industry before returning to teach at RIT as the first faculty member hired by the RIT Microelectronic Engineering program. Dr. Pearson left RIT to become founding faculty member of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Engineering in 1997. He returned to RIT and in 2008 he became the Microelectronic Engineering program director. His research interests include semiconductor processing (devices) and micro-electro-mechanical systems design, simulation, fabrication and testing

Dr. Milanowski has 20 years of experience in radiation effects on microelectronics, with applications ranging from radiation hardening approaches in semiconductor devices. He has worked to develop radiation analysis and design capabilities based on affordable, commercial design tools along with pureplay foundry access and process design kits. As part of this program, he coordinated first-pass successful design, fabrication, and test of numerous radiation hardened by design circuits. Dr. Milanowski’s experience included total dose, single event, and high-dose rate testing and analysis, and neutron sensor development. He currently provides technical consulting in the areas of radiation hardening and analysis, prompt dose and single event effects testing (analog/mixed-signal, power management, digital, and discrete power devices).
