Yokohama, Japan - January 31, 2017 - Silvaco Japan Co., Ltd. (Silvaco) announced that Optoelectronics Research Lab at Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University, has selected Silvaco’s TCAD Device Simulator Atlas for use in research on next generation high-efficiency dilute nitride semiconductors and solar cells.

Optoelectronics Research Lab at Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University, is engaged in the development of material fabrication, device fabrication processes and operation analysis techniques aimed at the next generation of high-efficiency solar cells. Their cutting-edge research relates to semiconductor crystal growth and optical/electronic devices. The lab has seen exceptional results on increasing efficiency with four-junction solar cells and intermediate band solar cells, using dilute nitride alloy semiconductors. Most recently, they achieved an improvement in quality of dilute nitride semiconductors with a nitrogen δ-doped superlattice structure. This aids to avoid degradation of the electrical and optical characteristics of dilute nitride semiconductors due to the immiscibility of nitrogen

Atlas, from Silvaco, helps users understand the physical phenomena inside a device and make reliable predictions about the operation of next generation devices. The Optoelectronics Research Lab highly values Atlas’ proven track record in solar cell research and the analysis results of solar cells using compound semiconductors, and thus made the decision to adopt this tool.

Associate Professor Shuhei Yagi of Mathematical and Electronic Information Division of Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University, stated, “We were studying the use of device simulators to further advance dilute nitride semiconductor research. We comprehensively evaluated Silvaco’s Atlas on its track record with solar cells, support ability, academic-oriented licensing and such, and decided to adopt the tool. Going forward, we expect Atlas to contribute to the optimization of intermediate band solar cells being advanced by our research lab.”

Silvaco’s General Manager Yoshiharu Furui stated, “We are extremely pleased that Optoelectronics Research Lab at Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University, which is producing some of the greatest research results in dilute nitride semiconductors, has adopted Atlas and appreciates Atlas’ abundant analysis functionality for compound semiconductors. Silvaco will continue to contribute to the energy research field, including solar cells, with the advanced model of our TCAD products.”
